Tucked away in a quiet corner, The Cobbles is nevertheless situated right in the centre of the historic town of Kelso (shops, hotels, restaurants, pubs) in the lovely Scottish Border country, and is easily reached from the main A1 trunk road at Berwick (23m).
The apartment is located on the ground floor of what was formerly the Spread Eagle Hotel, which dates from around 1777. It has an open view at the back across a quiet, leafy churchyard towards the romantic ruin of Kelso Abbey and the architectural oddity of the octagonal parish church. It is comfortably furnished in a light modern style and is conveniently situated midway between the river and the cobbled town square (about 2 minutes each way - the baker's shop for early morning rolls and other goodies is about 30 seconds from the door!) The owner has added the thoughtful touch that, while the apartment sleeps four, the sitting/dining room is equipped for six so you can entertain if you wish. There is also ample parking at the back of the building.
Kelso is a charming town and very well situated for forays to the coast. There is a lovely sandy beach at Coldingham (34m) and the spectacular cliff top seabird sanctuary at St Abbs is a must-see. The fortified town of Berwick, with its turbulent history as a political football between Scotland and England, is also worth a visit, and Lindisfarne and Holy Island should not be missed. In other directions, Edinburgh is within an hour's drive, and the small Border towns to the west amply repay exploration.
There is no shortage of things for visitors of all ages to do in the immediate area. Each of the Border towns has its own golf course (a Freedom of the Fairways ticket gives access to no less than 21 of them!). For something special, there is also the new Championship Roxburghe Course, which is only a few miles out of town. There is riding at Nenthorn (3m), quad biking at Abbey St Bathans (24m), and municipal tennis courts, a swimming pool and ice-rink in the town itself. Fishermen have the choice of the Tweed or the Teviot (Kelso stands at their confluence) and the Tweedside Tackle Shop, for permits etc., is even nearer to the Apartment than the baker's!
Of the many fine country houses and castles in the area, the nearest is Floors Castle, home of the Duke of Roxburghe, which is within walking distance. There are very pleasant riverside walks which are immediately accessible from the Apartment and keen walkers are also within easy reach of the Southern Upland Way and St Cuthbert's Way as it makes its way towards Lindisfarne.
Heating in the Apartment is by electric panel heaters. Electricity, bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Pets are welcome. Sorry, no smoking is allowed within the property.
