-> Far northwest coast
The stretch of coast north of Wester Ross is sometimes ignored in favour of the rich pickings around places such as Ullapool and Gairloch, yet for many the stark, elemental beauty of the Highlands is to be found on the far northwest coast as nowhere else. Certainly the hills of Assynt, the area immediately north of Coigach gathered around the port of Lochinver, are among the most distinctive in the country, and the features of the ragged coastline, from the towering rock stack The Old Man of Stoer to the beautiful strip of sand at Sandwood Bay, retain an essence of wildness. Elsewhere, those inspired to explore can discover hidden waterfalls and secret trout lochs, while a simple ferry can take you to see the puffins of the island wildlife reserve of Handa. Places to stay and eat can be thin on the ground, particularly out of season, but the very lack of infrastructure is testimony to the isolation which this corner of Scotland delivers in such sweeping style.
