As the main gateway to Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh is an important transit point for tourists, locals and services. However, despite the through traffic and the fact that it is the terminus for the train route from Inverness, the town itself has little to show off. Of much more interest to most visitors is nearby Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland's most famous and popular sights, perched at the end of a stone causeway on the shores of Loch Duich. It's not hard, however, to step off the tourist trail, with the Glenelg peninsula on the south side of Loch Duich testimony to how quickly the west coast can seem remote and undiscovered. A few miles north of Kyle of Lochalsh, the delightful village of Plockton is a refreshing alternative to its utilitarian neighbour, with cottages grouped around a yacht-filled bay and Highland cattle wandering the streets.
