~~ Let's Get Ready to Ramble! - by Kathryn Wortley ~~

Few countries in Europe can boast as breathtakingly diverse a landscape as Scotland - from rugged mountains, deep lochs and wide expanses of heather moorland to tranquil green pastures and unspoilt beaches.

What better way to soak up these surroundings, explore our unique heritage and relax in the fresh air than by going walking!

From climbing remote summits to strolling woodland trails, there are walks suitable for everyone. Reminders of our history abound, from ruined castles to ancient monuments, and wildlife can be spotted in many places.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere, with anyone. With the advent of summer, there's never been a better time to put your best foot forward. Take advantage of the rising temperatures, the scent of summer on the breeze and the long evenings, and go walking!

Highland to Lowland?

Whether you are a Munro bagger or a novice rambler, the Highlands offer some great walks. Climb Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain, visit the Cairngorms National Park, or explore the interesting network of trails around Elgin and Speyside - an area famous for its whisky.

Moving south, why not take the short hike up Dumyat near Stirling, from where you can gaze upon the Wallace Monument and Stirling's famous bridge and castle.

With 7,300 miles of coastline and 800 offshore islands, there are also lots of opportunities for a seaside promenade.

How about a walk along part of the Fife Coastal Path, trying some local produce at one of the quaint fishing villages en route, or perhaps a walk at Horse Isles Bay near Palnackie. This is a National Scenic Area, with great views over the Rough Firth.

Further north, the walk along Sandwood Bay in Sutherland is often said to be the best in Scotland.

For an adventure, the Shetland Islands' cliff-top paths over breathtaking scenery, sandy beaches and clear waters are a bit of paradise.

Short strolls to long treks?

Short walks are the ideal way to fit some exercise into your busy day, relieve stress and make you feel good.

Chatelherault Country Park near Hamilton boasts over 10 miles of footpaths within 500 acres of beautiful countryside. See the 'palace' with views of Ben Lomond.

Alternatively, catch the tide and take the interesting walk from Cramond to Cramond Island near Edinburgh.

Scotland also has lots of long distance trails that are possible as either an expedition or a series of day trips. Perhaps the best known is the West Highland Way (95 miles). Following old drove roads, it links Milngavie near Glasgow to Fort William - look out for the spectacular Red Deer at Kingshouse.

The West Island Way (26 miles) is the first long distance route on a Scottish island. Recharge your batteries amidst Bute's remote moorland and tranquil forests on this walk.

Go with friends

What makes a walk even more enjoyable is company! Ramblers Scotland has 52 local groups that organise a range of walks throughout the year. Some groups also organise short walks, walks using public transport or special interest walks, for example nature or history.

Why not come along and see how much you enjoy it!
